High Speed Connections With the high costs of Internet Access being very expensive with frame or T1 access, DSL, ISDN, or Cable are more reasonable solutions for a small size business. DSL especially has become more popular for companies lately because of the low costs. ADSL uses the same telephone wires that your regular phone uses and transmits at a much higher frequency than the human ear can hear. Limitations are, of course, 18,000 feet or 3.4 miles and also t requires a semi clean line between your telephone company's Central Office and your house. Upstream speeds can be as little as 64Kbps and as fast as 800Kbps. Downstream speeds are from 384Kbps to 8Mbps. However, the local companies are selling packages of 128Kbps upstream and 384Kbps downstream. Speeds vary of course depending on how close you are and how clean the line is. ISDN is used for companies that are farther away from their Central Office. ISDN is separated by two digital Channels of 64Kbps which gives you 128Kbps. Downfalls are that during business hours you are charged on a per minute basis. Cable Modems are not available to businesses unless you run your business from home. Most cable companies do not allow you to host your domain from this type of connection, but it works well if you just need to browse the web at a low cost.
